A 22-year-old man has been charged with 11 offences after he allegedly crashed a stolen vehicle into a police car, in Townsville.
Officers were called to Oonoomba after 11.00am on Tuesday to reports two stolen vehicles were parked on the street.
To avoid police, it’s alleged the man drove a Mazda BT50 towards the police car, hitting the rear side of the vehicle.
He then is alleged to have tried to run away from police.
When police tried to arrest him, he allegedly hit the police officer in the face.
The police officer sustained a broken nose and was taken to the Mater Hospital and has since been released.
It will be further alleged the man had stolen the Mazda BT50 from a Pimlico residence on November 10.
The man has been charged with four counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and one count each of stealing, attempted burglary, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving unlicensed, serious assault occasioning bodily harm, contravene a police officer requirement and wilful damage.
Detective Inspector Jason Shepherd from the Townsville Crime Services says the 22-year-old man has been charged in relation to several crimes across Townsville over the weekend.
“During 2024, as part of Operation Whiskey Fastback, the Townsville Property Crime Unit have charged 307 adult offenders with 1,233 property related offences.
“Adults comprise about one-third of offenders charged by the Property Crime Unit.
“Investigations are also continuing to identify further offenders involved in the stolen vehicle activity that occurred over the last weekend.”
